Despite public support for safe, legal abortion continuing to grow, attacks on abortion rights and access are rampant across the country, and Ohio seems determined to pass the most restrictive abortion law in the nation.
Ohios House Bill 413, or the Define offenses: aggravated abortion murder and abortion murder, is the latest example of extreme policy that expands the anti-abortion frontier past the bounds of science or sense. If passed, the so-called abortion murder bill would create a new felony that punishes people who have abortions and health care providers who treat them with life in prison.
The bill targets physicians for doing their jobs while at the same time spreading fear and misinformation about pregnancy. A provision in the legislation calls for attempting to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy into the womans uterus, a medical procedure that is not possible and does not exist.
