The Race, Ethnicity, & Culture in Health (REACH) Action Committee is responsible for executing »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s programming and advocacy efforts in issues of race, ethnicity, and culture, including but not limited to cultural sensitivity, health disparities, social determinants of health, and diversity in the healthcare workforce. 

Position description

Community Coordinators are understood to serve within the larger context of »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s Advocacy and Action work. Leveraging their areas of expertise, they will engage in the following in close consultation with »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s Legislative Affairs Director:

    • Organize and lead grassroots community building spaces, including but not limited to contributing to Advocacy & Action’s monthly social hours, bringing the work of the Action Committee to »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ members via virtual and in-person (when possible) chapter gatherings, and beyond, curating recurring touchpoints for connection-building. 
    • Develop and maintain the work of resiliency and rituals of belonging, creating ongoing trauma-informed initiatives, including but not limited to peer mentorship circles, sacred processing spaces, chapter milestone celebrations, and beyond, which intricately weaves a strong safety net of support and deepen members’ sense of home across »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ chapters.
    • Strengthen chapter networks, coalitions, and local events as the backbone of our pillared infrastructure, enabling chapter leaders to host gatherings, foster regional alliances, and launch initiatives which amplify and uplift ASMA’s advocacy priorities with grassroots staying power.
    • We would love to include language here about expectations for ACT Community Coordinators to keep the membership team informed of ACT programming and actions, and would love to get insight on the best methods for that! For example, having ACT Community Coordinators participate in quarterly touchpoints with Membership and otherwise keeping Membership in the loop via email?
    • Oversee the alignment of committee-specific projects with »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s primary organizational priorities, thoughtfully integrating pillar deliverables into all initiatives.

        • Build a deeply thoughtful bridge between Advocacy & Action, the »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ Academy, and »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s Scholars Programs, positioning members to deepen their understanding of health justice and human rights, alongside building a practice of critical reflection on contemporary social, political, and clinical realities.

              Action Committee overview: Gender & Sexuality

              The Gender & Sexuality (GS) Action Committee is responsible for executing »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s programming and advocacy efforts in issues of gender & sexuality by (1) ensuring equal access within health care and within medical education for women and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTQ+) persons, and (2) supporting the training of medical students to become excellent health care providers for women and for LGBTQ+ persons. Toward these goals, the GS Action Committee advocates for policies that will improve the health or health care access for everyone including LGBTQ+ persons, and develops programming that will improve the training of medical students in the care of women and LGBTQ+ patients. Additionally, GS supports all women, LGBTQ+, and ally medical students by fostering a safe and inclusive environment, providing leadership opportunities, and advocating for their rights. 

              Women’s issues include but are not limited to reproductive health and rights, sexual health, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, representation of gender in research, disparities in health between men and women, and promoting and recognizing women in medicine. LGBTQ+ issues include but are not limited to a need for medical education reform, sexual health, healthy relationships, trauma-informed care, structural and physical violence against LGBTQ+ community, marriage and adoption equality with regard to patient rights, intimate partner violence, disparities in health within the queer and intersex community, promoting and recognizing LGBTQ+ people in medicine, and inclusion and equitable access in health care.

                  Action Committee overview: Environmental Health 

                  The Environmental Health Action Committee is responsible for executing »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s programming and advocacy efforts regarding environmental justice, climate change action, Earth Day, etc. »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ, back in the late 60s, played a major role in the establishment of Earth Day, which became recognized in 1970, on an international level.  More recently, climate change has only been touched on by other action committees. However, given the breadth and importance of environmental health, »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ established the Environmental Health Action Committee in 2019. This Action Committee has begun to fill the present void and continues to raise awareness as climate change remains a pressing matter in the lives of our future patients.

                    Members of the Board of Trustees (BOT) employ skills in strategic organizational thinking, long- term planning, resource allocation and advocacy to steward »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s resources and participate in all board-level decisions of the Association. The secretary and VPIA positions are voting members of the BOT. 

                    Position description

                    *This is a two year term. In applying for this position, you will serve as the Secretary for one year and assume the role of Vice President for Internal Affairs the following year. 

                    The Vice President for Internal Affairs (VPIA) and the Secretary are responsible for all planning and oversight of the House of Delegates (HOD). They assure that all resolutions to be debated by the HOD are submitted to chapters well before Convention; they staff, train and oversee all committees (Reference, Credentials and Nominations) of the HOD; and they chair all sessions. They are intimately involved in the function of three Committees to the HOD, and they oversee the elections of the national officers at the convention. 

                    The VPIA and Secretary also serve as members of the Board of Trustees (BOT). Because the Secretary/VPIA position is a two year term, the Secretary/VPIA brings continuity from one year to the next to the BOT, and their knowledge of the Preamble, Purposes and Principles (PPP) and »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s legislative functions makes them a great resource for information.

                    This is a two year term. In applying for this position, you will serve as the President-elect for one year beginning on May 1 of this leadership year and assume the role of President on May 1 of the following year. The National President shall work primarily from the »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ home office, currently located in Sterling, Virginia, but will also work within Washington, D.C., and travel domestically and internationally as needed to fulfill the obligations of the position.

                    The President Elect serves the first of a two-year term. The President Elect is responsible for all of the duties of all national officers and is expected to spend his/her year preparing for a successful year as president. Specific responsibilities include working with the VPM to recruit and engage members, serving on the finance committee, and assisting the national president as necessary.

                    The President is the senior elected officer of the association. The President is a full-time, salaried officer who serves a one-year term at the national office. As such, the president is responsible for overseeing the Board of Trustees (BOT) and all Association initiatives, working with local chapters and implementing »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s strategic plan. They preside over all meetings of the BOT and is an ex-officio member on all committees (except the Nominations Committee). The President is also responsible for choosing a theme and overseeing »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s Annual Convention.

                    The President represents »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ in all external affairs. They advise organized medicine on issues related to medical students, supports legislative and educational initiatives, often gives testimony on »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµâ€™s behalf and works with the media. The President may also initiate projects of priority to the organization.

                    The President should have strong written and oral communication skills, organizational and administrative skills and a complete knowledge of »Æ¹ÏÊÓÆµ. Other useful qualities are networking abilities, knowledge of health policy and medical education policy, and a willingness to travel. Most importantly, this is a full-time job. The President must be exceptionally dedicated to working to advance the interests of the Association.
